What is blind embossing?

Our high-quality, custom embossed labels are distinguished by their unique appearance. Unlike standard printed labels with no finish, blind embossed labels offer a sophisticated and subtle design that not only looks beautiful but also feels special.

Blind embossing is distinguished only by a local deformation of the label material. This means that extra accents with foil are usually omitted, as is the use of color. This is why this technique is also known as “colorless embossing”. Of course, with blind embossing on roll labels, a colorfully printed surface can be embossed. In this case, the minimalist charm and 3D effect of traditional blind embossing is somewhat softened. Nevertheless, a new, special effect is created that, depending on the application, can be both meaningful and aesthetic.

Refined details are realized in an elegant and delicate way using blind embossing. This creates a visual and tactile effect. Blind embossing can be selected in the online calculator. Questions? How does blind embossing work?

If labels are to be blind embossed, a deformation is created on the surface of the label at the desired points. This is done using a tool, heat and pressure. At unieketiket.nl, your labels with blind embossing will have a raised shape and thus a tactile contour. A distinction is made between positive relief (raised elements) and negative relief (lowered, deep elements). Lower embossing cannot be used for our labels. The intensity of embossing depends on the material thickness and the type of embossing tool. Most of our label materials, whether textured or untextured, can be combined with blind embossing.

Blind embossed labels: correct printing files

With regard to the correct print files, there are several aspects you need to consider for labels with blind embossing. Of course, our artwork service is happy to take care of this for you! By choosing the right custom package, your printing files will be created or customized.

While designing your label, keep in mind that the elements and fonts that are to be embossed for your blind embossed roll labels must have a minimum line width of 0.4 mm. Spaces and elements that are negative (recessed) must be at least 0.6 mm wide.

Would you like to provide your own printing data for your blind-embossed labels? Then use the tools below as a guide:

Production, relief thickness and relief area

Blind embossing is achieved using a special tool, heat and pressure. The same tool is used multiple times and allows for embossing at the desired location on the label material.

A magnesium tool is used by default at unieketiket.nl, but you can of course choose a brass tool upon request. Production-related fluctuations occur during tool application. In some cases, relief elements are not placed 100% in the desired position. In addition, the pressure affects the appearance of the embossing on your blind embossed roll label. Larger elements to be embossed require more pressure than smaller elements. This can lead to different results when an embossing contains small and large elements. Therefore, we recommend having multiple tools created in these cases. This way, each element can be embossed with the optimal pressure depending on its size. The size of the embossing area is also limited: larger areas can lead to sagging, which weakens the raised effect. We are of course happy to advise you on this! We also recommend our proofing service, which you can request. That way, you can be sure that your blind embossed labels will look as planned.

Magnesium or brass?

If you decide to use blind-printed labels, you need to choose the right tool. A magnesium tool is cost-effective in the short term and allows for sharp edges. Brass tools, on the other hand, are a more expensive alternative and are recommended for delicate elements that require embossing. In addition, brass tools are more durable, can be reused more often and are therefore cost effective and more durable in the long run.

Hot foil stamping and relief embossing as an addition or alternative

Of course, your label can have a finish other than blind embossing, or even several! As explained earlier, blind embossing is a partial deformation of the label. If you choose hot foil stamping as an alternative or complement, foil (without partial deformation) is applied to specific areas using heat, pressure and a tool. You can also refine your label with relief embossing, which is a combination of blind embossing and hot foil stamping: selected areas of the label are not only raised but also covered with foil at the same time.

An extra dose of protection for your labels

Finishes with a protective function include film lamination and protective varnish. Protective varnish gives your label a high-quality surface and protects it from abrasion. The properties of the protective varnish should be matched to the material of your label. Film lamination, on the other hand, involves applying a transparent film to the label instead of varnish.

Due to the characteristic deformation of blind embossing, it is not possible to apply an additional protective film. Therefore, blind embossing cannot be combined with film lamination. In this case, we recommend the protective varnish.
