That’s how versatile the use of hot foil is
Roll labels and wet glue labels with hot foil are particularly popular for standing out from the competition and drawing customers’ attention to your own product.
Hot foil labels are often used in the wine, sparkling wine, spirits or cosmetics industry and on high-quality food products. Hot foil stamping gives your labels a special surface texture that refracts light. Hot foil can be combined with many other finishes. Ensure that your products leave a personal, exclusive and unmistakable impression. In addition to hot foil labels, hot foil stamping labels and foil embossed labels are also common names. If you choose custom labels with high-quality hot foil stamping, there are several aspects to consider:
Thanks to hot foil stamping, sophisticated details that create both visual and tactile contrasts can be realized in a particularly elegant and delicate way. In the online calculator, you first select parameters such as quantity and material. Then you choose the right hot foil.

What happens during embossing?
When labels are refined with hot foil, a wafer-thin layer is applied to the surface of the label at the desired locations. This colored or metallic foil is applied to the material of your label with specially tailored tools and heat.
Almost all of our label materials, whether untreated, laminated or coated, are suitable for hot foil. We offer a wide range of different, combinable hot foils, so there are no limits to your creativity. These include the following foils:
- metallic or transparent
- matte or glossy
- gold, silver & hologram film
- copper, bronze & rose gold look
- pink, red, orange, blue or green
- And many more on request!

Hot foil stamping: correct print files with unieketiket.nl
With regard to the correct print files, there are several aspects you need to consider with labels with hot foil stamping. Of course, our artwork service will be happy to take care of this for you! Have your printing files checked and corrected by selecting the correct package.
You can also use our free tool for submitting printing data. Please note that elements and fonts to be embossed have a minimum line thickness of 0.2 mm. Blank and negative elements must be at least 0.4 mm to avoid cut-outs. Do you have questions about the technical requirements for correct print files? Then check out our tutorials.

Note: Sometimes unwanted deviations occur when applying the hot foil. If elements such as edges are embossed, the position of the element may change slightly during production. In addition, very thin elements may run on textured material.
Production, embossing intensity and material
Hot foil stamping uses a special tool, heat and pressure. The same tool is used several times and presses the foil at the desired position on the label material. At unieketiket.nl a magnesium tool is used as standard, but of course you can choose from other tools upon request:
- magnesium tools
- brass tools
On the one hand, production-related fluctuations may occur when using this tool. This means that, in some cases, elements are not placed 100% in the desired position. In addition, the embossing pressure affects the appearance of the embossing element. Larger elements require more pressure than smaller ones. Therefore, the results may differ if an embossing tool contains small and large elements. We therefore recommend having multiple tools made in these cases. This way, each element can be embossed with the optimal pressure depending on its size.
On the other hand, there are material-dependent properties: For example, hot foil stamping with a large surface area and filigree cutouts on certain materials can lead to shrinkage or cracks in the foil. In addition, colored foils are often thinner than other foils and therefore not suitable for textured materials, such as cotton paper. Of course, we are happy to advise you on this! We also recommend our proofing service. That way, you can be sure that your label will look as planned.
Magnesium vs. brass
A tool made of magnesium is cost-effective in the short term and allows for sharp edges. By comparison, the brass tool is a more expensive alternative and is recommended for filigree elements that require embossing. In addition, a brass tool is more durable, can be reused more often and thus saves costs and resources in the long run.

Hot foil with 3D effect!?
When hot foil stamping is combined with blind embossing, the result is relief embossing. It is considered the queen of finishing. Thanks to the interplay of blind embossing and hot foil stamping, the sophisticated elements come out best, creating an exciting 3D effect that you can not only see, but also feel.
The material is formed at the desired point with blind embossing and then finished with a hot foil. Blind embossing, on the other hand, does not use color marking and impresses only through partial deformation. unieketiket.nl specializes in blind embossing (raised elements). The tactile contour enhances the labels not only haptically but also visually. In addition, the height difference creates an interesting play of light and shadow, creating an absolute visual highlight.
Metallic labels as an alternative
Hot foil stamping is not the only way to create a special metallic effect. In addition to paper or film labels, we also offer metallic labels, of course. This is a cost-effective alternative to hot foil.

An extra dose of protection for your labels
Finishes score mainly because of their aesthetic aspect. Moreover, finishes can also be functional! Consider protective varnish and film lamination in matte or gloss.
Protective varnish not only gives your label a higher quality or more striking surface, but also protects it from normal wear and tear. The properties of the protective varnish should be matched to the material of your label and the hot foil: For example, in the case of glossy hot foil, we recommend choosing the right glossy protective varnish. In the case of film lamination, on the other hand, a transparent film is applied to the label as an additive that protects against more persistent abrasion. Both finishes can be combined with hot foil and give your label an extra dose of protection against external influences.
