What is HP Mosaic?
HP Mosaic is personalization software based on the HP Smartstream Designer. Simply put, the software automatically generates a potentially unlimited number of unique graphic label designs based on a fixed base pattern. This basic pattern is the central element of the process. HP Mosaic technology uses an algorithm that creates the designs based on this pattern.
How does HP Mosaic work?
The central element of HP Mosaic is the base pattern. A master file and a vector graphic (the pattern) are joined together. The graphic is then varied by rotation, scaling or color change to create new patterns each time. The user can also give the algorithm commands about which colors to keep or swap. Unique variations are created and each label becomes unique. To achieve the best results, the base file should be as complex and colorful as possible. The rule is: the more complex the base pattern, the better and more individual the results. And: larger runs require a more complex pattern so that as many different variations as possible can be created.

More personal and individual thanks to HP Mosaic
Not so long ago, a printed label was nothing more than a means of communicating basic information, such as the product name or legally required info about the product. Today, labels and packaging take center stage as an essential part of the marketing mix. With individually printed and personalized labels, viewers’ attention can be heightened and a direct, emotional connection can be established with them. Products can become part of storytelling through added images, messages and variable designs, becoming firmly entrenched in consumers’ minds. HP Mosaic makes marketing more individual and personal, and thus more meaningful to the customer. HP Mosaic enables experimentation with personalized marketing campaigns to communicate innovation creatively.
More and more brands and manufacturers are turning to mass individualization, such as Coca-Cola with its Diet Coke campaign in Israel or Pril with its colorful dishwasher bottles featuring the classic Pril flower. Nutella has also already given its promotional jars unique designs in the Nutella Unique campaign. Another example: In collaboration with Heineken, artist Emily Forgot created unique designs for beer bottles using HP Mosaic 2000. You see: The possibilities for designing the most diverse and individual packaging with HP Mosaic are almost endless.
Mass customization thanks to digital printing
But this mass customization is not only feasible for the “bigger” brands. Thanks to digital printing technology, small, flexible print runs with individual and highly variable designs are also possible. Within a few hours, the finished labels are made from a print file – an efficient process that is only possible in this way with digital printing, since there are no more setup times, as was the case with the conventional printing process. This mass customization and personalization of labels becomes feasible for almost every brand owner thanks to digital printing.
