Our modern label production offers two different methods for cutting custom labels from the material. On the one hand there is the conventional method of die-cutting using a die-cutting knife, and on the other hand there is the method in which the labels are cut out using a laser die-cutting machine.
In the conventional method, a specially tailored die-cutting blade is applied to the so-called die-cutting cylinder. The cylinder rotates and punches out the desired label shape from the material. In the alternative process, a laser beam is used to accurately cut out the material. No die-cutting plates are required with this method and almost any shape can be cut out, as the laser beam can be adjusted individually and fully automatically. If you order a label whose shape is too complicated for our machines, we will contact you as soon as possible to find a solution. If you are planning a very unusual shape for your labels, you can also send us your print file in advance. We will then check if and how we can produce this shape.
Advantages and disadvantages of the two methods
1. Conventional die-cutting with a die cutter
When die-cutting with die-cutting knife, a special custom die-cutting knife must first be ordered. This is attached to a magnetic punching cylinder during production and set individually for the particular job.
Advantages
- All materials can be chosen.
- higher production rate.
- sharper cutting edges.
Disadvantage
- more expensive for smaller runs
2. Cutting out with laser
In laser punching, the label is cut to size and shape with a laser beam. This hits the material and cuts it into the correct shape. Unlike conventional die-cutting, no die-cutting knife is required here.
Advantages
- More flexible because no special die cutter needs to be ordered and placed in the die cutting machine.
- Any format can be produced immediately.
- Cheaper for smaller runs, as less time and materials are needed for set-up.
Disadvantage
- Label designs with a dark color on the outer edge may have “white edges. This phenomenon is especially visible when the label is stuck on a dark background.
- For larger sizes, two laser beams are used for cutting. These may not match 100% exactly and a small point may be created where the lines meet.
- More complex custom shapes may not be cut out correctly, for example, sharp corners.
- Only a limited number of materials are available for laser production.
How do I know which method will be used for my order? During the price calculation in the calculator, based on the specified parameters, such as size and material of the label, it is automatically decided whether the labels can be laser cut. The calculator will always indicate the lowest price. Thus, for smaller runs in combination with standard laser materials, the price for laser production will always be displayed. If you then continue ordering, the additional price for conventional die-cutting will be indicated (in the second step of the ordering process) and you can decide which method you want to use for your labels.
If no surcharge is indicated, laser production is not possible and your order will be produced conventionally. This is either because the material of your choice cannot be produced on the laser, or because the print run is too large for laser production, or you have ordered labels with hot foil or relief embossing, these will always be die-cut conventionally.
