Water-repellent labels on rolls – individually printed
Water-repellent labels are usually printed on a material called polypropylene (PP). This is a polymeric material (sometimes called a “vinyl label”) that does not absorb water. This is how the water-repellent effect is created. Water-repellent labels are needed in certain filling and logistics processes, for example, sterilizing or filling bottles. But PP film is also used to label aluminum cans immediately after cold filling (e.g. with beer). The material is also suitable for use in extreme environments or for protection against moisture. Note: Our labels are not designed to remain submerged for long periods of time or to be used in salt water.
Water-repellent labels on paper?
Yes, you can. Have your paper labels coated with a protective varnish. The paper absorbs the varnish and becomes sealed. This reduces the chances of the label absorbing too much water. However, it will not be completely waterproof. Many paper labels printed in full color with a protective coating do withstand refrigeration and logistics processes. This opens up many possibilities in terms of material selection and label design. Film lamination gives your paper labels better water resistance. However, keep in mind that a foil lamination over a textured paper, such as natural paper, would completely cover the structure. This can lead to air entrapment between the textured paper and the laminate, creating unsightly air bubbles. Polymeric materials such as polypropylene are generally more suitable as water-repellent stickers. They can withstand both wet filling processes and cold processes without additional sealing.

Water and ink – how do they go together?
We print all labels digitally using HP Indigo printing machines as standard. This is a commercial printing technology that prints with waterproof electric ink. Even in contact with water, the ink does not fade and your label remains legible. Nevertheless, we recommend a protective coating such as varnish or lamination to prevent premature wear and tear.
