Statiegeld on cans and bottles
Deposit on cans
A deposit (€0.15) on cans has also been introduced in the Netherlands from April 1, 2023, and is mandatory for all metal beverage cans containing beverages for direct consumption, with a capacity of up to and including 3 liters. A new nationwide deposit system has been introduced for this purpose, making it easier for consumers to recognize which packaging carries a deposit. The introduction of the Statiegeld in the Netherlands on cans is intended to reduce litter and increase recycling of cans.
Deposit on plastic bottles
Statiegeld is also charged on plastic bottles for soft drinks and water: €0.15 for smaller bottles and €0.25 for large bottles. For PET bottles with 100% juice, a deposit is not mandatory, but you as a producer can decide whether to charge a deposit. For other drinks in plastic bottles (e.g. lemonade, or milk products) there is no deposit.
The Statiegeld logo and EAN code
The deposit logo and EAN code
If you want to put products on the Dutch market for which a deposit is required, the packaging must display the Statiegeld logo and a new Dutch EAN code. With new EAN code, deposit vending machines can recognize deposit bottles or cans. A new EAN code is needed to recognize whether it is a packaging with a deposit. Only then deposits will be returned.
Statiegeld logo requirements.
For cans and plastic bottles for which the charging of a deposit is mandatory, the deposit logo must be displayed on the packaging. The logo makes it immediately clear to both consumers and the collection point that there is Statiegeld on a package. The design of the labels is the producer’s own responsibility. The following legal rules apply for displaying the logo in the Netherlands (The information is based on Statiegeld Nederland, see Voorschriften gebruik logo (NL)):
-
The logo should be applied to the bottle and can (not on the outer packaging of multipacks).
-
The minimum size of the deposit logo is 1.2 cm.
-
No alterations to the logo are allowed.
-
The proportions of the logo may not be altered.
-
The statutory minimum letter height is 1.2 mm.
-
The logo can be printed in other colors under certain conditions.
-
The logo can be downloaded at statiegeldnederland.nl.
-
The ownership and copyright of the logo lie with Statiegeld Nederland.
