FSC®-certified materials

What is FSC?

Forest Stewardship Council® is an international, non-governmental, non-profit organization established in 1993 following the Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit. Its goal is to manage the world’s forests in a way that meets the needs of the present without compromising the future of generations to come.

The FSC principles

The FSC has established uniform basic principles for responsible forest management worldwide. Standards are developed and application and marketing options for the forest products produced are derived. The most important marketing tool is undoubtedly the FSC label, the use of which is strictly regulated and must be approved by the FSC. The management standards, in turn, are adapted at national level to the respective conditions and possibilities of individual countries in order to enable and ensure optimal implementation.

These ten principles include compliance with laws, contracts and agreements, protection of workers’ rights and working conditions, maintaining the economic viability of the forest, and monitoring management measures. More information about FSC can be found on the Dutch FSC website.

What does FSC-certified mean?

The FSC label certifies that the wood used comes from FSC-certified forests and thus from sustainable and environmentally friendly forest management. There are three different certifications:

• FSC® 100%: The products are made entirely of FSC®-certified material.
• FSC® Mix: The product is made from a mix of materials from FSC-certified forests, recycled materials and/or FSC-controlled wood. Although controlled wood does not come from FSC-certified forests, it reduces the risk that the material comes from unacceptable sources.
• FSC® Recycled: The products consist entirely of recycled materials.

Moreover, only FSC-certified companies are allowed to advertise and label products with the FSC label.
