What is the scope for food labels?
Packaging for prepackaged food products is either directly printed or provided with an appropriate product label – think bottles, cans or glass jars. These labels can be round or rectangular or have a special custom shape. The product label is often produced as a self-adhesive label on rolls, so that the labels can be easily applied to the products by machine.
Self-adhesive labels are also used with freshly packaged food products, which must be equipped with details such as price, content, quantity and expiration date using a (thermal) printer. These labels are usually supplied on a roll, with a roll configuration to suit the printer being used.

What is important for food labels?
In principle, labels for food are no different from labels used for other packaging, such as bottles, boxes and cans. What is important is choosing the right label material with an appropriate protection or finish. Of course, we can advise you on this. But certainly it is also important to take into account the specific regulations that apply to labels for pre-packaged foodstuffs.
What should be listed on food labels?
Labels of prepackaged foods must meet several requirements.
Among other things, you are required to:
- use the correct designation of your product
- indicate the net quantity and/or alcohol content
- to include a list of ingredients, indicating allergens
- state the expiration date
- provide honest and clear information
- use a minimum font size
- the name or trade name and address of the food product operator must also be included.
- there are also rules that apply only to specific foods, such as organic, vegetarian and whole grain foods and dietary supplements and frozen foods.
Good to know about small labels: the size of the label determines what must appear on the label. The regulations tell you what must be stated at least on small labels of a certain size. You must then place a reference on the label to the location of the other mandatory information.
The requirements can be found here: for the Netherlands: Download here the latest version of the “Handbook on Labeling of (both pre-packaged and non-pre-packaged) Foodstuffs” of the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority. For Belgium: Labeling Requirements, from the Federal Public Service (FPS) Public Health, Food Chain Safety and Environment.
Material, shape and printing of labels
Paper is usually used in the production of labels for the food sector. In addition, of course, unieketiket.nl offers other materials to print your labels for food on. Think, for example, of printed films, material for thermal printers, transparent labels and various finishes.
Food labels suitable for the freezer
Labels that will be used in the freezer must be able to withstand not only very low temperatures, but to some extent also humidity, since dew or condensation must be taken into account. The simplest solution is to produce labels intended for use in the freezer on standard film or paper with a permanent adhesive. In this case, the labels are suitable for temperatures down to -20°C. We do recommend that you first test the material under the conditions under which you will use it.
We also have a special freezer material that is ideally suited for extremely cold temperatures. Our freezer-grade material guarantees reliable adhesion, high moisture- and temperature-resistance and excellent readability thanks to high-resolution digital printing. This material has a temperature range of -40 to +60 degrees. And, your products can be labeled with it even when frozen. If you have any questions about labels that will be used in the freezer, please contact our team of experts.
