What is grass paper?

Grass paper, as the name suggests, is paper made largely from grass, rather than from wood (products). The basic principle of grass paper is that harvested grass is first dried and then made into hay. It is then ground and pressed into pellets. At the plant, the pellets are then dissolved in water. Now the material – depending on its subsequent use and area of application – can be further processed into packaging, boxes, gift paper or even labels, for example. The component grass is available almost everywhere as a natural raw material and grows back several times a year. This makes it the ideal sustainable raw material for eco-friendly labels.

Sustainable production

Sustainability and environmental issues play an increasingly important role in consumer purchasing decisions. Economical use of resources is particularly important. Consumers also attach increasing importance to the sustainability of products and companies. With grass paper, this desire for sustainability and environmental protection can also be implemented in the label industry:

• Grass paper consists of 30% sun-dried grass fiber (hay) and 70% FSC®-certified paper (wood-based).
• It is FSC®-Mix certified.
• Grass paper is made from the rapidly renewable raw material grass, which reduces wood consumption, making it especially sustainable.

Because grass paper production can be done purely mechanically and without the use of chemicals it also offers environmental advantages over conventional paper production:

• Compared to pulp production, processing grass fiber can reduce energy consumption by 97% and water consumption by 99%.
• Overall, about 20% CO2 can be saved in the production of grass paper.

At the same time, the material can be used and processed like conventional paper.

Please note: Since grass paper is a natural product, batches may vary slightly in color and texture. Due to the texture of the material, fine text and elements may break off. In flat printing, outliers may occur.

Design & finishing

Not only the production of grass paper is special. The appearance of grass paper also provides a unique touch: the relatively rough and coarse structure and the individual grass fibers are still visible on this slightly yellowish material. In principle, of course, this material can also be individually finished with hot foil or protective varnish. However, the idea behind the development of grass paper is to have an environmentally friendly and resource-saving material that allows for ecologically responsible operations in the packaging and labeling industry. Additional finishing would contradict this basic idea.

There are no limits regarding your creativity when it comes to shape and size. Round, angular or unique shapes – all forms are possible with grass paper. Because the material is naturally quite yellowish, we recommend the use of deck white for a nice white color where needed.

* The finished grass paper label with adhesive layer consists of 81% compostable material. Thus it does not comply with the standard DIN EN 1343, which requires 90% compostable material. Therefore, grass paper cannot be awarded the “compostable” predicate. For more information on the compostability of label materials, please contact our customer service department.
