E-label: the future of wine labels
Since Dec. 8, 2023, a new EU regulation has been in force that has had a profound impact on the labeling of wine and wine products. unieketiket.nl is at your side as a reliable partner to help you make your wine labels meet these requirements.
EU Regulation 2021/2117, also known as the CAP reform, requires wine producers, bottlers and retailers to include information on ingredients, nutritional values and energy values on wine labels. You have a choice between the classic label and the innovative e-label. Please note: In both options, information on allergens and energy values must appear in printed form on the bottle label.
The digital option: the e-label
If you opt for this, you have to place a QR code on the label. This code then directs the customer to an online page that has information, such as the relevant nutritional values and an overview of your product’s ingredients. Note: It is prohibited to direct the QR code to advertising or sales promotions! An advantage of the e-label is that you save space on your wine label. This leaves more room for your own creative design. But of course, you can also choose a small(er) label.
The classic label
All mandatory information is placed on the label in written and printed form with the “classic label. What is new is that you must include a table of nutritional values and a list of ingredients.

The benefits of using an e-label:
- Using a QR code gives you more room (literally and figuratively) for creative design.
- With a space-saving QR code, you can opt for a smaller and therefore cheaper label.
- The information behind the QR code can be quickly changed if it turns out to have errors; changing text on a printed label does not come without additional costs.
- Using a QR code opens up many digital possibilities, such as zoom, search and translation functions.
- If you sell your product in multiple countries, you can have the QR code refer to the same text in different languages. The location of the person scanning the code will then determine in which language the information is displayed.
The disadvantages of digital information:
- Not everyone has a smartphone or tablet (at hand).
- An internet connection is not guaranteed always or everywhere.
- Moreover, the QR code must be applied correctly and without errors, and you must ensure that the information is available online. A website and (hiring) IT knowledge are a must!
Your new wine labels in 6 steps:
1. Gather the required information: To meet the new requirements, you must know or have all the specific values of your wine determined.
2. QR Code or not: Decide whether to go for the digital method with a QR code. If yes, contact your website administrator. If you choose the traditional label, all mandatory information must be printed on the physical label. Note: Information on allergens and energy content must be printed on the label in both variants.
3. Label design: Because of the addition of the extra information, the design must be changed or redesigned. Make it easy on yourself and order a print file service PRO package and we will make sure the new information is integrated into your existing label design. If you plan to completely redesign your labels, our design service is at your disposal.
4. Coordination with responsible authorities: You yourself are responsible for the correctness of the texts on your wine label and therefore, coordination with the competent authorities is recommended. We recommend that you submit the relevant data and design to them prior to having your labels printed.
