What is augmented reality?
The term augmented reality, or AR for short, means “expanded reality.” Virtual objects, such as images, animations or text, are added to the real world and the two worlds merge into a shared, augmented reality. Most people probably know the technology from the game Pokémon Go. Augmented reality is increasingly being used in the packaging industry.
The product as an experience
Using augmented reality on a label makes it possible to turn the product into a true experience through interactive packaging. After all, shopping is becoming increasingly digital: not only is e-commerce on the rise worldwide, but physical retail is also increasingly turning to digital solutions. Read more about digital labels and the evolution from QR to AR.
New technologies such as augmented reality are a great marketing tool. They can help communicate directly with customers and surprise them. Digitized labels offer completely new opportunities to appeal to customers – especially on an emotional level – creating customer loyalty, as advertising messages can be addressed directly to the customer at any time and packaged in an entertaining way. This allows brands to further differentiate themselves from the competition and appeal to customers at every stage of the customer journey – not just at the point of sale itself. Augmented reality labels often include some sort of QR code and also make it possible to appeal to entirely new audiences. However, it is also important that the digital content is relevant and compelling to the customer. Otherwise, digitized labels will hinder successful customer loyalty.

Design your augmented reality label
To design an augmented reality label, you first need a so-called creator. You can choose from a large number of providers. For the Garden of Aja label, we worked with the app Zappar. It works like this: to expand your reality, you first need to install a creator app on a smartphone or tablet. Then you need an object, such as a product with a label that has a code on it. This is scanned by your customer using the app on their cell phone. The application recognizes the code and activates the digital content. This can be a simple object, a video, an animation or overlaying text. But Zappar is not the only way to create augmented reality experiences. There are many other providers, such as Blippar and ROAR, that do not require extensive technical knowledge. For complicated and custom AR projects, Unity with Vuforia and Adobe Aero are more suitable. Therefore, which app or program you use depends on your own AR skills and experience in creating AR content.
