How does offset printing work?

But now about offset: offset printing (from the English “set off”) is an indirect “flat” printing technique, in which the design to be printed is transferred to the material via aluminum printing plates. This is an indirect flat printing process based on the chemical repulsion of water and grease. The different surface properties ensure that the printing ink adheres only to the desired areas. The areas not to be printed are moistened with water so that they repel the greasy ink.

The individual colors are printed on the label in increments. A separate printing plate is required for each color in the design. The printing plates are placed in the printing machine and the different colors of ink are then printed on the substrate in separate print runs. Printing plates and substrate do not come into contact with each other in the process; the ink is transferred to a rubber blanket. This blanket then transfers the ink to the substrate In offset printing, both paper and plastic film substrates can be used. Offset printing, because of its high start-up costs and complex printing process, is particularly suitable for large print runs.

Which printing process is right for me?
