Swarte Swaen - Dry Cider
With Swarte Swaen, founder Jacob van den Berg has turned his passion into his profession: since 2020, artisanal Dry Cider and Eau de Vie have been made in Haarlem, fermented according to the traditional method of freshly pressed apples. The name refers to the black swans in Haarlem's ring canal. The founder talks about his company and the product.
About Swarte Swaen
100% fresh, natural and artisanal – Swarte Swaen Dry Cider could hardly be better described. A hobby of Jacob van den Berg that got out of hand resulted in the founding of Swarte Swaen Cidery & Distillery in 2020. “We have been making artisanal Dry Cider and Eau de Vie since 2020, pressing the fresh apples ourselves with our heavy oak apple press. Then the fresh apple juice goes into large stainless steel vats, where alcohol is created naturally through fermentation. Fermentation in the bottle gives Swarte Swaen its natural fresh bubbles and head of foam when poured. The name Swarte Swaen was chosen because traditionally a number of black swans swim in Haarlem’s ring canal and because the name Swarte Swaen is also easy to understand for English speakers.
The product
Swarte Swaen Dry Cider is made by hand in our warehouse on the Westergracht in Haarlem from Dabinett and Harry Masters apples from Herefordshire and from Bramleys from Dutch soil. Due to limited production capacity, this exclusive cider is so far only sold in two unique locations in Amsterdam: Proeflokaal ‘t Kelkje on the Oudezijds Voorburgwal and the historic tasting room of Wynand Fockink in the Pijlsteeg and of course through our own webshop. Due to the growing fanbase, there are expansion plans to scale up from 500 liters to 5000 liters capacity for which a crowdfunding campaign has just started where investors will be richly rewarded with our Eau de Vie.

The design
For the label, we wanted to upgrade from a sticker to a professional label and with the expertise of unieketiket.nl, we succeeded. With them, we were even able to replace the white in the front label with reflective silver foil, now giving the label a premium look.
