Fast and easy: thermal direct printing
Thermal direct printing uses a special heat-sensitive label material called Thermal-direct printing paper. The printer’s print head heats this material, causing data or graphics to appear in the right places. This method of printing is fast, easy and economical because it requires no ribbon. This makes it ideal for short-run applications. However, direct thermal labels are less durable: exposure to heat, light or wear can cause fading or loss of readability. Therefore, direct thermal printing is especially suitable for temporary applications such as receipts, tickets or logistics temporary labels.

Durability and reliability: thermal transfer printing
Thermal transfer printing works with a print ribbon that transfers color to the label material via heat. Unlike thermal direct printing, the label material itself does not need to be heat-sensitive. Melting the ink from the ribbon and attaching it to the label creates a durable, legible print that is resistant to abrasion. This makes this method ideally suited for labels with bar codes and applications in industry and logistics where long-term legibility is important.
Ribbon choice is crucial: wax ribbons are ideal for porous papers, while resin ribbons perform better on synthetic materials such as plastic films when extra durability is required. Print settings such as temperature and print speed also affect the end result: incorrect settings can damage the label material, while the right combination ensures optimal print quality and readability.

To determine which technology best suits your labels, it is important to first analyze the intended use. For applications with short lifespans and low costs, thermal direct printing is often the most practical choice.
